The main house was beautifully redone from the ground up in 2018-2019. The remodel was carefully envisioned by current owners (thinking they would live there forever), with an eye to practical function, style and lasting quality. Modern systems combine with a multitude of details that together add up to easy living, including
There’s also a super sweet detached cottage that was pre-existing; legal status is unknown (buyers to investigate to their satisfaction).
From the street, the wisteria-draped trellis and custom-designed entry gate give great curb appeal and street presence, but the house itself is tucked away, private and secure. The Nest doorbell is a great addition, allowing you to respond to visitors at the gate from anywhere. Inside the gate you’ll find a tranquil garden with charming hangout spaces in both the front and back yards.
The Elmwood is a highly-coveted location with a great commercial district, close to campus, with easy access to the best of Berkeley. The housing there consists mostly of palatial homes and multi-unit buildings. It’s rare to find a single-family home of a manageable size there, but this is a great one!
Marilyn has been a top-producing agent in the Berkeley/Albany area since 2002. Her deep understanding of the market and her comprehensive approach to the preparation and marketing of homes have led to truly exceptional results for her seller clients. When working with buyers, she offers candid assessments of not only the highlights, but also the potential concerns with prospective homes, and is an excellent guide through the challenges of buying in a competitive market. She is straightforward and easygoing, but also analytical, organized and detail-oriented. Her extensive relationships within the local real estate community allow her to find opportunities and successfully advocate on behalf of her clients.
A Berkeley resident for over 30 years, Marilyn Garcia grew up in New England and graduated from Dartmouth College. She moved to Berkeley in 1988 to attend Cal where she received her Ph.D. in economics. After a number of years as an economics professor, teaching classes in macroeconomics and financial markets to undergraduates and master’s students, Marilyn decided to make her passion for real estate her full-time focus.
Marilyn lives in a classic 1950 Roger Lee mid-century modern with her husband and their Milo Foundation rescue super-dog. They have one daughter, who graduated from Berkeley High and Brown University. Marilyn’s interests beyond real estate and her family include art (museums and artist open studios), great architecture of any style, travel, farmers’ markets, origami, and Cal rugby.
Marilyn is, quite simply, the best agent I've ever worked with anywhere. Rather than go into detail about her immense local knowledge, her natural kindness, her uncanny intuition; instead of expounding on the ease with which she navigates the sometimes byzantine process of buying or selling a house in the Bay Area, and in lieu of describing her wit, sense of humor, and professionalism let me say since interviewing and hiring her several years she has since bought a house for me; sold a house for me; bought another house for me; bought a condo for my mom; sold that condo for my mom; bought a friend's house; bought another friend's house; and bought a friend of that friend's house. In other words, once you work with Marilyn you will be proud to recommend her to everyone you know and there is no bigger compliment than that. - Jason K.
Marilyn is an outstanding real estate agent. She has now bought 1 property and sold 2 for me over the last 15 years. She knows the local market extremely well and how to position a property for successful sale. Her description of the ideal buyer for our last home was shockingly accurate! Marilyn went out of her way with our most recent sale by overseeing some fix-up work on the house (we had already moved) and putting in a bunch of sweat herself. She really rolls up her sleeves to get us the best outcome! Did I mention - on top of it all - she's just a really pleasant person? Down to earth, consultative, calming, and rational are all terms I would use to describe her. Don't hesitate choosing Marilyn for your next sale or purchase. - David W.
Being a mortgage lender myself, I have dealt with thousands of real estate agents. Marilyn doesn’t simply stand out in the crowd – she truly stands above all others for her thorough knowledge, professionalism, dedication, attention to detail, down to earth attitude and client-oriented performance. - David S.

The much sought-after neighborhood of Elmwood has a rich architectural history. Early 20th-century houses, estates, and some of the more notable homes designed by prominent turn-of-the-century Bay Area architect Julia Morgan can be found in this neighborhood.
The local shopping district centered on the intersection of College and Ashby avenues is a bustling hive of activity, featuring an array of gourmet eateries, boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. Residents of Elmwood also enjoy an easy walk to public transportation, a library, and parks. For an only-in-Elmwood, experience, visit Mrs. Dalloway's, a shop that combines a bookstore and garden supplies, or Rialto Cinemas Elmwood, a Berkeley city landmark that houses a three-screen cinema.
In terms of hyperlocal culture, Julia Morgan Theatre offers camps and classes as well as performances of music, dance, and theater throughout the year.
